LES CRETES DI CHARRERE

Aymavilles > Loc. villetos, 50
Les Crêtes’ History: Originally from France, the Charrère family moved in the mid 1700s to what is now the Aosta Valley of Italy. They started out as farmers and millers, establishing a home site and building a water powered mill on their property in Aymaville. In 1955 the Charrères planted their first two hectares of grapes, focusing on making quality wines out of the indigenous vinifera varieties grown in the Aosta Valley. In 1989 the Charrères enlarged the original estate and built the Les Crêtes winery. The old mill and home site will soon be restored for use as an agritourism destination. Costantino Charrère, his wife Imelda, and their daughters Elena and Eleonora manage the day-to-day activities of the vineyards and winery. While making decisions based on a solid foundation of classic vineyard management and wine-making skills, they are continually integrating new and innovative ideas gathered from frequent visits to wineries and vineyards around the world. Les Crête’s Vineyards: With 25 hectares (62 acres) of grapes dedicated to wine production, Les Crêtes is the largest privately held vineyard and winery operation in the Aosta Valley. The Aosta Valley, located in northwest Italy, is Italy’s smallest and least populated region. It is an alpine valley with grape growing conditions typically associated with mountain elevations. Close to Mont Blanc and surrounded on three sides by the Italian, French and Swiss Alps, it is a beautiful and unique part of Italy. Les Crêtes vineyards are planted in both indigenous vinifera varieties (Petite Arvine, Petit Rouge, Fumin, Mayolet, Cornalin), as well as the more traditional vinifera varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Muscat) which are also well adapted to the region’s climate and soil conditions. Les Crêtes vineyards are located along the Aosta Valley’s Dora Baltea river and are distributed among vineyard blocks in six different villages; Saint Pierre, Aymavilles, Gressan, Sarre, Aosta and Saint Christophe. Plant densities in the vineyards range from 7,000 to 8,000 vines per hectare. Because the Charrères believe great wines always start with quality grapes, vineyard management at Les Crêtes is firmly based on a meticulous agronomic management system. Spraying to control diseases is kept to a minimum to protect the regions delicate terroir and to follow the new E.U. rural policies for preserving mountainous areas. The soils that have developed over the centuries on the glacial morain hillsides around Aymaville are composed of a mixture of sand and calcareous rocks. Les Crêtes vineyards are located at relatively high mountain elevations (600 to 1,000 m. /1,970 to 3,280 ft.), and due to the high elevation climatic conditions, the harvests at Les Crêtes often begin in late autumn. This gives the grapes time to ripen while exposed to a wide variation in day and night temperatures, a natural process which adds to the unique aromatic character and flavour profile of the resulting wines. Les Crête’s Winemaking: Les Crêtes produces about 230,000 bottles annually (19,200 cases). The winery, the heart of the estate, is located in the scenic Aymavilles area of the Aosta Valley. Visitors to the winery can view the 16th Century Côteau la Tour tower which stands high above the surrounding vineyards and is the symbol of Les Crêtes and its line of quality crafted wines.

ANDREW MURRAY VINEYARDS

Los Olivos > 5095 Zaca Station Road PO Box 718
Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhône varieties, Syrah and Viognier, in the late ’80s while traveling through the Rhône Valley. He took that passion further when he headed out for a short internship in Australia in 1992 to learn more about the famed Australian Shiraz. There he fell so in love with Syrah that he overstayed his planned three months by almost a year. When he returned home, he earned a degree in viticulture and oenology from U.C. D avis and started his eponymous vineyard and winery, working with growers who mirrored his passion for excellence. He found vineyard owners who matched his desire for perfection, and who farmed their vines to ruinously low yields with the most advanced viticultural methods. Andrew’s razor sharp vision can be surmised succinctly in the company motto, “Handcrafted wines from steep hillside vineyards, planted exclusively to Rhône Varieties.”

ADDAMO WINERY AND VINEYARDS

Orcutt > 400 E. Clark Ave Suite A
Our estate vineyard is located in the Santa Maria Valley appellation of Santa Barbara County. Located just 10 miles from the Pacific Coast, our vineyard benefits greatly from cool, maritime influences. The long “hang-time” of our estate fruit is due in great part to the temperate climate of this coastal appellation. Our vineyard was planted methodically and meticulously, with special attention paid to varietals best suited to our terroir. Taking into account the soils at our property, the meso- and micro-climates, the coastal influences and the orientation of the sun upon our hillsides, we deduced that Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Grenache and Syrah are best suited to our estate. We farm our vineyards sustainably, and our fruit is all hand-harvested and hand-sorted. Currently, we make our wines at our private, state-of-the-art werehouse facility in Santa Maria, but recently broke ground on our winery, which will be located at our estate vineyard.

AMPELOS CELLARS

Lompoc > 1633 West Central Avenue
At ampelos, we are firm believers in the old adage that the “wine is made in the vineyard”. Our estate vineyard has been planted to those varietals that will showcase the location, soils and climate at our site, and which will produce wines of distinction and quality. We are thrilled that those best suited to ampelos vineyard are those grapes which are vinified into some of our very favorite wines! The varietals we have planted are Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache and Viognier, based on extensive clone diversity to provide us our “spice cabinet”. In addition to wines from our estate grapes, we continue to produce wines from fruit from some of our favorite vineyards - our neighbor in Sta. Rita Hills, FiddleStix for Pinot Noir, Alisos for Syrah, Cuatro Vientos in Santa Ynez Valley for Viognier and the Syrah for our rosé wine and Byron in Santa Maria Valley for our Grenache and Syrah.

Since 1984 Bryan has been producing wines of exceptional quality from his family owned winery located on the far western edge of the Santa Ynez Valley in northern Santa Barbara County. The prestigious James Beard Foundation chose Bryan as one of the "Top Ten Small Production Winemakers in the World," the only American chosen for this oenological dream team. In choosing Bryan for this award, David Moore wrote, "Bryan Babcock best exemplifies the traits I look for in a great winemaker. The quality of Bryan's wines speak for themselves, yet it is his personal commitment to excellence that stands out so much. His relentless experimentation, his willingness to explore the possibilities with so many grape varieties, and his aesthetic are a world apart from the usual American approach to winemaking."
